Back in May of 2017 we were contacted by a hobby farmer who had acquired a pregnant cow that had subsequently given birth, but he didnt want to keep either the Mum nor the calf as he was looking to down size and the Mum kept escaping. So we agreed to help and take both of them, but when we asked about the babies passport, he said - what passport?
This was seriously bad news as in order to move a cow from one holding to another, the move must be reported to DEFRA - failure to do so will lead to the slaughter of the animal and a probable fine. Where a cow is born on site and no passport is obtained, it's OK to keep the animal there, but you cant move them to another site - the only permitted move is to a slaughterhouse.
It transpired that little Gretel had been born about 3 & a half weeke earlier, so we suddenly realised we still had time to register her, the time allowance being 27 days from birth. So we helped the farmer do the paperwork & then we moved the 2 to our Asheldham site - There were quite a few sighs of relief all round. Gretel lives with her Mum Heidi at the new farm site where she very much wants to stay and hopes you can help her do so by helping her meet her sponsorship target :)
