Pig Nut APPEAL

At Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary we look after around 100 pigs ranging from miniature pot-bellied pigs to the very much larger pigs like Matilda (Large White breed).

Most of our Pigs however have been saved from the meat trade and veer therefore on the rather “large” size!

Feeding all the Pigs is a challenge as of course Pigs are always hungry & generally eat …like Pigs!

The standard feed for Pigs is the “Pig Nut” – which comes in either a large or a small pellet which contains all the nutrients that they need. As a guide they need between 2.5 to 3kgs of nuts per day per Pig – but as most are in a herd situation, to ensure they all get sufficient, we base our feeding at the 3kg per pig level

This means that we would use a whopping 660 pounds (300kgs) of feed PER DAY

Thankfully however we are able to supplement their feed with bread, vegetables and fruit which is donated by local supermarkets and other outlets such as the Olio app and also the food bank in Brentwood where the food they receive cannot be used for people - however in recent weeks the amount of waste food being made available to us has reduced significantly making things even harder - possibly a knock on effect of the cost of living crisis which is also severely affecting the sanctuary as many people are stopping charitable donations now and this will get a lot worse when winter comes with the huge increases in power costs :(

The “FREE” food we do get is amazing and we are so grateful to our Bread Run Volunteers who collect it and bring it to the Sanctuary on a daily basis.

However, despite the car loads of free food that we receive, we still need to use 5 sacks of pig nuts a day and it is the cost of these nuts that this appeal seeks to address

5 sacks a day equals approximately 150 sacks a month (20kg in a sack)

We buy these in at £9.95 a sack as we get a very good deal from our feed supplier given the overall volumes of food that we order in. Pig nuts on Amazon can be as much as £20 or even higher! (NB the prices are up 20% due to general feed price increases over the past 2 years)

So the aim of this appeal is to try and find extra and hugely needed support for the Pigs in the shape of new “Pig Nut Supporters”

We need to find supporters willing to cover the cost of a sack of nuts just once a month – think of it as a couple of coffees out once a month, or just £2.29 a week

£14.92 a month will buy 1 and a half bags

£19.90 a month will get 2 sacks

There is an option to select another amount to suit higher or lower donation amounts.
