Lizzie came to Tower Hill Stables in spring 2026, alongside another pig, in a situation that was both urgent and heartbreaking.

We were told very clearly that if we could not help, Lizzie would be shot. There were no other options left. Once again, we were the last chance.

We need to be clear — taking Lizzie in was not an easy decision. The sanctuary was already under strain, with rising costs and falling donations. Saying yes meant accepting another lifelong responsibility at a time when resources were stretched thin.

Josie

A Spring 2026 Rescue

Josie arrived at Tower Hill Stables in spring 2026, under circumstances that left no room for hesitation.

When we were contacted about her, the situation was urgent and distressing. Josie was hours away from being shot, and the call we received came from one of our long‑standing contacts — someone who knows the realities of rescue all too well. They were in tears as they told us that we were the last chance.

We want to be honest. Taking Josie in was not ideal. At the time, the sanctuary was already under severe financial pressure, and every new arrival represents a lifelong commitment. Saying yes meant committing to her feed, bedding, veterinary care, and daily welfare for the rest of her life.

But when the choice is life or death, it becomes an impossible thing to walk away from.

Josie is now safe. She has space, food, routine, and the security of knowing she will not be moved on or discarded when she becomes inconvenient. She has a future — something she very nearly lost.

Ben arrived at Tower Hill Stables in spring 2026, under circumstances that were painfully familiar to us.

When we were contacted about Ben, the message was stark and urgent: we were the last chance. If we said no, Ben would have been shot.

We want to be completely open — taking Ben in was not ideal. At the time, the sanctuary was already under significant financial pressure, and every new arrival brings a lifelong commitment. Saying yes meant committing to his feed, daily care, farriery, veterinary support, and safe shelter for the rest of his life.

But when the choice is safety or death, it becomes an impossible thing to walk away from.

Ben is now safe. He has a stable environment, regular food, companionship, and the calm that comes from knowing he is no longer under threat. He has time — something he very nearly didn’t have.

• Audrey Our stunning black beauty. Audrey is known for her glossy feathers and her dignified, friendly demeanor. She loves a good dust bath and watching the world go by.

• Tina, Turner, and Rita This trio of lovely white turkeys are inseparable! Tina is often found foraging in the grass, while Turner (the one with the magnificent snood!) and Rita are always close by, enjoying the safety of the sanctuary together.

• Delilah With her striking grey and white heritage plumage, Delilah is one of the most distinguished members of the flock. She is a brave and curious bird who is often found perched up high, keeping a watchful eye over her friends.

Benny

This is Benny! Benny is Head Cow and in charge of the smaller gang known as the "Bennys" (Benny, Dino & Luigi)- He is truly a magnificent animal but one that needs to be treated with the respect he is due - as do they all - but Benny is very protective of the herd and will defend them if he feels or senses a threat.

Where animals like cows are left in peace most of the time as they are here, they revert to their natural behaviour and instincts which is why we tend to use the mules to drive around the fields to check the animals and the peremiter fencing - rather than do it on foot - clearly its a lot quicker in a vehicle, but more importantly a lot safer! Some of the cows of course are very friendly and like a neck scratch, but the Benny's aren't in that category.

Like Dino and Luigi, Benny is a Hereford and would be described as "prime beef" by the industry. Like his friends he was saved from that fate to live his best life at the sanctuary and if you can help him to continue to do that, it would be amazing :)

Help Us Give Angel the Retirement She Deserves

A few weeks ago, we were approached by a local lady who was heartbroken to part with her beloved horse, Angel. Due to unforeseen circumstances, she could no longer keep Angel and was desperate to find her a home where she wouldn't be worked. She reached out to Fiona, hoping we could help.

While we are currently trying to limit the intake of new animals until we can increase our supporter numbers, we couldn't turn our backs on Angel. The current economic climate has put a strain on our resources, but we are committed to helping where all other options have failed.

This is where you come in. We are asking our followers to consider sponsoring Angel for just £1 a month. Your support will allow us to provide Angel with the peaceful retirement she deserves. We know we can't save every animal, but with your help, we can make a difference for Angel and many others like her.

Jonathan

Jonathan was rescued in 2017 together with three friends, Dylan, Woodstock and Malky.

Jonathan had an accident and broke his leg - thankfully Cambridge University Equine Hospital agreed to treat him and he wore a cast for 6 weeks. It was a nasty break, but he is now fully recovered and loves to spend his time with the 13 little calves that have recently arrived at the Sanctuary.

Violet

Violet was a cade lamb rescued in 2017. Cade or "Pet" lambs are the smallest of triplets. Ewe's only have two teats and so can only really rear twins or a single lamb. If the third is kept with mum then all three will be underweight as far as the "industry" is concerned, so the smallest lamb is usually disposed of :(

Violet was rescued before this happened to her along with 30 others, all now loving life at the Sanctuary.

Gabrielle

Rascal's mum was rescued in 2017. Unknown at the time was the fact that she was pregnant with Rascal and quite a few of his brothers and sisters!

All now neutered and living with mum at the sanctuary in a herd of around 100 they enjoy their bread, fruit and vegetables as well as a regular mud bath!

Gabrielle

Mum Gabrielle, was destined for slaughter but we managed to save her just in time. Realising quite soon after that she was pregnant with twins! Georgie (right) and Gracie we’re born Sunday 1st March in time for spring.

Now all three are safe at the Tower Hill Sanctuary.

Tina

This is Tina - rescued a few years ago from being served up for someone’s Christmas dinner Such a sweet and gentle soul - heart-breaking that so few care about non pet animals

Blossom and Foaly

Blossom the horse was bought as a riding horse at a yard in Suffolk. However it soon became apparent that she had been drugged when "tested out" as she was starting to become difficult to handle. If fact she was deemed un-manageable by her new owners and arrangements were made to have her shot.  Some of the other people at the yard tried to prevent this by seeking a new home for Blossom... She arrived at the Sanctuary on January 2nd 2021.  5 months later the reason she had not wanted to be ridden became apparent when we found a small foal at her side in the field! She had been 4 months pregnant when originally purchased

Unfortunately, the birth didn't go well and Blossom developed Toxicosis, which was passed to her baby and became a chronic infection in her rear leg knee joint. So bad in fact that the vet only gave her a 5% chance of survival. However we took that chance and aggressively treated the infection with daily intravenous injections of antibiotics and daily flushing of the joint with saline.  As the days went by, her chances of survival started to improve and eventually the infection went and she is happily gallping about with Mum who also made a full recovery.

This is Pippin

Pippin was found at the side of the road in Norfolk - A lady spotted her and took her home. It is probable that she fell or escaped from a truck driving her to market or slaughter.

Pippins leg was badly hurt and took several vets visits and a lot of TLC to get right. She is now happily living with the small flock of Turkeys at the sanctuary.
